Soldier Beetles. Soldiering on…
… Or something like that.
When I was young (and summer holiday play involved daisy chains, dolls and prams) and summer holidays were long and languid, a cry would often ring out over the fields, ‘blood sucker!!’… And all children would stop what they were doing and run in different directions, arms waving!
Similar states of crisis and alarm ensued when an ambulance was heard, ringing its bell, ‘Hold your collar till you see a four legged’ (pronounced ‘leggid’, in my corner of the Black Country). ‘Or somebody will DIE’. We spent a good deal of time hanging on to our collars and debating whether fire engines should be accorded similar respect (they shouldn’t. Just ambulances).
Even today the muscle memory is strong!
In other news I made scones and forgot to add the sugar.
I tasted them.
I think served with cream and jam I’ll get away with that one.
