BETULA PAPYRIFORA

It's Mono Monday and the theme is "WOOD."
~
This is a Wisconsin Paper Birch (Betula papyrifora);  it's all wood and one of the most beautiful trees in Wisconsin, or anywhere for that matter.  It's good firewood but it burns HOT and fast.  Oak and maple (hardwoods) are better for long lasting, manageable heat.

If you look in LARGE you might be able to see what looks like several small holes (lenticels) in the outer bark which, in fact, are small holes in the bark.  They allow for oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange with the living layer of cells, the cambium, between the bark and the wood.  All the rest of the tree is non-living except for the tips of the roots and the tips of the twigs and the leaves.
~
EXTRA.......Adult Herring Gull (Larus argentatus); it has NOTHING to do with wood but I like it nonetheless.

BEST IN LARGE.
