Hosta's Last Stand...

They were beautiful while they lasted...but are on their last legs now. I went out this morning before the real heat arrived and snipped off a lot of the spent blooms.

I then dashed up to our local Portuguese bakery (extra - note the yummy Portuguese tarts) to buy my old stand-by coffee cake. I like to always have one in the freezer  - lest there be drop-in visitors. Well, I did have unexpected drop-in visitors shortly after I got back, but they weren't wanting refreshments! My nephew Rob, his wife and two young boys were in town and came by for a couple hours to chat. It was so good to see them. Our paths don't cross very often, and those boys are growing up fast!

It was another hot, hot, humid day. These heat-wave days are wearing thin..If I wanted to live in a tropical climate, I would have moved years ago! I spent most of the day indoors in AC again, but with company to talk to, it was a much more interesting day than usual.

And then to top it all off, a neighbour dropped by offering me a bowl of home-made lobster bisque!  Luciano is a relatively new acquaintance; he and his wife moved in to the rental house on the corner during the winter but I had not met either of them until just the other day. It seems he loves to cook, and as he gets to know a neighbour, he delivers food! A very creative way to get welcomed into the neighbourhood! The bisque was fabulous...actually he had thrown in lots of scallops and shrimp along with the lobster so I guess one should call it a seafood bisque?  A rose by any other name etc?

I also spent time reading The Mitford Affair  and it will be interesting to note the similarities and differences with the TV series. I am most interested to see how the girls' relationship with the Nazis and fascism turned out. I realize most people know all this, but somehow I missed the whole sorry tale of the Mitfords? I have so many gaps in my general history knowledge, that it is embarrassing.
