and through the wire...

Giant Horntail

We have Scottish Power coming later this week to take down a tree close to electricity wires and they offered to cut up branches we already recently cut down and put the excess through their chipper, which was nice... so this afternoon we sorted out it all into different piles... and we got over half of it done.

When I was doing this I heard a really loud buzz and this big waspy thing landed on a tree but moved on. Then it reappeared on some of the logs I had piled up and it was still hanging around when Mrs C came home. I have not seen one before but it is a Giant Horntail and despite looking waspy, does not bother humans. It was hanging about so long I reckoned it may have been laying eggs (which it does in trees... that can take 5 years to hatch) and right enough, the long black wire at the rear that goes down to the log is how it transfers the eggs. We moved the log to the side for now so it could move on in peace... it wasn't phased by me moving the log.

Afterwards I took Arlo on his evening walk and it turned out really nice, very peaceful in Arniston.
