Now for something completely different
Tonight's show was not the usual fare. A string quartet, but playing and singing traditional Appalachian music, with spiky modernist accents. They are:
- a Scot living in London
- an American living in Vermont
- an English woman living in Greece
- an American living in Cologne.
How on earth do they organise rehearsals? I think they've been playing together for a long time, after meeting by chance in a pub in Kent, and they have quite impressive CVs. I think Jane Rothfield in particular (second from left) is quite a big cheese in traditional music in the US. See here for more details.
The lighting was much more restrained than usual, to the point of being inadequate, and they weren't spectacular to look at, but the music was great, and quite unpredictable. Unsurprisingly, some of it strongly resembled Scottish and Irish music (Irish friends S and T appreciated it) but there was a spiritual and some blues too. Have a listen -- it may not be to everyone's taste! I'm grateful for the cultural programme organised (and paid for) by the EDF holiday centre -- our entertainments would be less interesting without it.
Other than that, a quiet day. Following my meeting with Christine Drouillard at the art exhibition in Fabrezan, she called round today on her way home to the Dordogne after collecting her work with the three small square photos I'd chosen to add to my original three. She'd sent me photos of dozens of them, and I took screenshots of the ones I liked best and then shuffled them about on my screen to see which would work together. I'm very happy with them -- no doubt they will be blipped at some point.
