Monreal to Tiebas
My energy returned today, probably a consequence of eating something reasonably substantial last night. A shorter distance today, breaking up the long section to Puenta la Reine into two stages. After breakfast, a good croissant and coffee, I set off quite late around 8.30 for the 15k trek to Tiebas.
It was even cooler today and still very windy, for the first couple of hours I could have done with my rain jacket as well as my fleece for warmth. I walked fast which helped and reached the first village just after 9.30, dominated by a church and a few houses. Pamplona is not far away, I could see it for most of the day, and I suspect that some of these quiet settlements are dormitory communities.
My first human encounter was with an obliging digger driver who refilled the gully he was making so I could cross it safely. The second encounter was with another herd of sheep and a sheepdog which I videoed and sent to Leo, my older grandson, who is one today.
I reached Tiebas looking forward to coffee and a bite to eat which I was confident I would find in this relatively large town dominated by a medieval castle. Nothing was open. There was an excellent swimming and sports complex on the edge of town with a snack bar, no food but I did get a half decent coffee. I surreptitiously ate some emergency snacks.
Elena collected me at 3pm and returned me to Monreal for a second night. Our conversation was all weather related, the cool temperatures are remarkable.
After a shower and the daily clothes washing I explored the town, I’d been too tired yesterday. Its most notable features were its outdoor swimming pool, the church of St Barbara which happened to be open and a beautiful medieval bridge, extra.
