Simple Fun
It was Rest Day today in the orienteering week, so after a leisurely get up, we drove into Aboyne to the 'Spider on a Bicycle' Cafe for pastries and drinks. It's a smashing cafe and the owner gave Euan a bunny hunt to do whilst we were waiting for the food to be prepared. There were seven bunnies hidden around the cafe and we thought we had them all until the owner pointed out one was a chipmunk! We finally spotted the seventh high up in the cafe ceiling, balanced on a beam.
Then we were off to the National Nature Reserve at Muir of Dinnet, where there just happened to be lots of orienteers! We chose the shortest circuit to visit 'The Vat', a vast swirl hole, but it turned into the longest walk because there were so many fun things to do on the way round. Euan built an island in the stream; jumped off rocks, scrambled through the rocky arch to reach the Vat, enjoyed filming a panorama on Dad's phone which resulted in he and his Mum being in the finished photo twice and played hide and seek along the downward path.
Suddenly, it was well after lunch and we drove to the farm shop cum tearoom at Finzean, another great find. We had a tasty lunch, stocked up on dinner supplies and presents for neighbours and friends before returning to Glen Tanar. An excellent day all round!
