The Joy of Thistles
Some of the thistle flowers in the field have gone to seed and are now shedding. The seeds drift through the air and find their way into the house through the open windows. Meanwhile bees are busy collecting nectar from the remaining flowers.
The highlight of our walks these past few days has however been the sighting of clouded yellow butterflies amidst the meadow grasses and flowers. Their golden yellow wings are so thrilling to see. They are joined by flocks of goldfinches feeding on the thistles.
It’s been busy day but my main task was to rework the planting in our small front garden. It faces south and has poor soil so needs drought tolerant plants which thrive in full sun but which don’t mind being pounded by southerly gales and rain. I’ve come up with a scheme I think might work so we’ll see how it copes. It includes sedums, herbs like sage and rosemary as well as a few salvia. Down at the allotment I planted a white scabious and Korean mint to try attract more bees and other insects.
Hoping your day has gone smoothly and wishing you all the best.
