Azulejos

The tiles that decorate many buildings in Portugal are called Azulejos.

They have played a pivotal role in the architectural decoration of buildings in Portugal since the 14th and 15th cenruries.

They've been widely used to embellish both public and private buildings, churches, palaces, as well as homes.  They add significant beauty and elegance, but also serve practical purposes such as insulation and protection against the elements.

My eye was drawn to this building because the beautifil tile exterior has been saved as a frontispiece for the magnificent modern building behind.  No attempt has been made to blend the two styles.  I think they partmer each other beautifully.
