La Palma, Canary Islands

Rita's house or La Casa de Contadores

Here is the start of my door series-hopefully-to-be.

This is a door which was stolen one dark and stormy night. Added to which it leads to nowhere in a house which does not exist. I know, I know, sounds like a puzzle or a riddle but it's true!

The 'house' is in fact a retaining wall. It was built partly to stop loose soil and stones tumbling down onto our path. (Everything is on a slope here being a mountainous island, and our drive sits behind and at the same level as the roof in the photo). The other purpose was to house a new electricity meter. OH didn't want to build a boring old wall and thought it would be fun to make it look like an old cottage, very much in the style of our house.
The neighbours of course think we are entirely mad (sad, but true) because quite often they don't even render their houses let alone make them look like something they are not.

The door is a bit of another story. OH designed the 'wall' so that this particular door would fit. It wasn't a door we had but one which we had seen leaning against an empty house nearby. So being good people, we found out who the owners were and asked them if we could buy it. They said that they had no idea what door we were talking about but they would have a look the next time they were in the area. But that wouldn't be for some time, as in a year.
So in the meantime, we borrowed it (because OH is braver than me).
I should point out that the owners have since seen it in its new home several times but made no mention of it. And after five years, I don't imagine they will. But Palmeran people are kind like that.
And all that's behind the door is the electricity meter. The meter reader man shakes his head in despair at it.
