Au revoir
Time to say goodbye to France. Merci beaucoup, you’ve been a blast.
We put some of our things in the car last night so not so much to carry down to old staircase.
I popped out to put the recycling in the bins. You can just see the silver covering on the left of my blip. We have seen several of these large underground bins for recycling and a lorry will come along and pick up the whole thing and insert an empty one. I also visited the boulangerie to pick up some croissants and pastries for our journey.
We left 8:30am local time for our drive to Calais . We were ahead of schedule and stopped en route for our breakfast. Arriving at the tunnel early we were able to get on a train 1.5 hours ahead of time and no problems like our outward journey.
We arrived home about 2pm. After a cuppa and sit down I got on with some washing and Mr C cut (butchered) the long grass. A Chinese takeaway in the evening to finish off our hols.
I thought I’d take this opportunity to list the places and our personal thoughts about them (don’t feel the need to read on lol).
Strasbourg ~ we loved and would visit again. Probably not drive there though but also take the chance to visit some other pretty local towns nearby.
Annecy ~ We really loved and wished we stayed longer. Another one to revisit. Although maybe one of the villages around the lake as Annecy is quite busy with tourists. I know we are tourists too! ;-P
Roquebrune ~. I loved that I was able to visit Menton which was one of my wishes. Although our apartment was lovely and newly decorated, the area was residential and the coastline along there is very pebbly. Ironically, for the south of France the weather, although very hot, was quite cloudy so we didn’t quite have the beach days we planned. Not one to revisit.
Bandol ~ Yes! This was more like the south of France. Sandy beaches, clean and upmarket town. Our stay was too short but definitely a beach holiday destination to return to.
Arles ~ I found this a little scruffy around the edges but with an art vibe about it. With the Roman ruins it was different and really interesting. Enjoyable stay.
Limoges ~ We had our best meal in Limoges but apart from the pretty old part of town we didn’t feel there was much else to it. A working city rather than touristy I felt.
Saumur ~ We enjoyed our time in Saumur and would revisit the area but to do a tour of the Loire Valley vineyards.
Honfleur ~ A delightful, pretty fishing harbour but, oh my! It was busy. Apparently they get 5 million visitors a year. That’s a lot for a little town.
We loved all the places we visited and some, but not all, that we would happily visit again.
2300 miles of driving and a huge thank you to Mr C who did it all.
