Volucella inanis

It was Mrs Catspaw who first spotted this large hoverfly on the flowers of some Marjoram at the far end of our back garden this evening. I hurried back to the house to fetch my camera, but when I arrived back at the Marjoram bush, it promptly flew off. After tracing its brief halts on various other nearby plants, we thought we had lost it, but then Mrs Catspaw saw it again, this time on our bird feeder, where it lingered long enough to be photographed.
