St Mary Magdalene, Peckleton

Our choir director lives in Peckleton, south Leicestershire, and so she asked for our choir to sing there yesterday. The building stands isolated in fields. You have to walk several hundred yards to reach a toilet. Nonetheless, it is a Grade 1 listed building dating from Norman times although much of the building was done in the 16th century.

The magnificent gravestones that line the drive up to the front door are testament to the wealth and age of inhabitants up to the age of death. Many date from the 18th century when people seemed to die young.

The church is very proud of its wild flower drive, full of harebells, otherwise it's the same selection of plants that grow in our lawn. See extra.

The church was well attended for the concert on the theme of 'Harmony in Flight,' in other words, Birds. I'm told it has a nice acoustic. All I could hear were sopranos singing sharp or flat behind me. And as for me, my voice has gone gravelly at the most inopportune times.

A heavy rain shower accompanied me down the M1. The sun was out on the way back.
