A Sense of Place

Hidden behind these trees is Buckland Abbey in West Devon. The monks who built their abbey here chose wisely. The site occupies a sheltered spot surrounded by pastures where sheep have grazed for hundreds of years. There is still an orchard , herb garden and walled kitchen garden. The  grounds of the abbey run down to a fine stretch of the River Tavy where there are trout and salmon. To me the landscape here has a peaceful serenity, and even a short visit can rejuvenate the spirit. This morning in the mist and light Summer rain it felt very atmospheric. Now,  as the rain has become heavier I can look at the image and apprciate the meditative quality of this lush landscape.
