Big Pumpkin

This is one of the statues of the "ArtZuid" project.
ArtZuid 2013 takes place from May 22nd until September 22nd on the Apollolaan, Minervalaan, Zuidas, Vondelpark and Museumplein in Amsterdam. The curator this edition is former director of the Dutch Rijksmuseum mr. Henk van Os. This year the theme is Engagement. 70 sculptures of 61 participating artists from more than 20 countries are presented in the beautiful Berlage district of Amsterdam South.

This is "Big Pumpkin", made by Erwin Wurm (Austria, 1954). He explains that this is his humorous response to the ambition of art -like philosophy- to discuss the meaning of life. His preference is to link this to everyday reality. Although the people are not actually portrayed, they are there, endearingly so in fact, because you as the observer have caught them in their helplessness. Something like that happens here with this painted bronze statue "Big Pumpkin".
