Tiger, tiger
And it did burn bright when it opened its wings as I gently ushered it out of the downstairs utility room with a feather duster. It had such a distinctive wing pattern that I was easily able to look it up in the internet, courtesy of the NHBS guide to Common UK Moth identification. It's a Jersey Tiger Moth which, according to the website, is mostly found in the South-West of the UK though it is spreading North. In our case it has gone due East. Apparently this moth was considered scarce in the UK until recently and could only be commonly encountered in Jersey in the Channel Islands and some parts of the South Devon coastline. So, I was pleased to welcome it to our part of Surrey.
I've further checked the ID on another website - ukmoths - which states that it has been spreading north and eastwards with good numbers to be found in London and neighbouring counties.
