From Navan to Kanata and various points south
Ottawacker Jr. is still coming to terms with the new time zone, so we let him sleep in till 10 before I went into his room and started tickling him. Ah, the small things in life.
Another nice day, summer seems to be pretty much installed at the moment. Quick trip up to Navan to get some vegetables and fruit – it is an hour-long round trip, but the quality is much better and it isn’t lining the pockets of the Americans, so is well worth it. We contemplated heading up to the Mer Bleue bog for a quick stroll in nature, but it has been closed the last couple of times we have been there, so the proposal was met with a large eye rll and little enthusiasm. Then back, a bite to eat, and Mrs. Ottawacker took Ottawacker Jr. on a bus ride and then to the cinema to watch Bad Guys 2. I was a late bale – last night’s warm ups took it out of me and there was a lot of hip and knee pain today.
They were out for most of the afternoon. At 5, I got a call from the younger of the two, asking if I could drive out to Kanata to get them, for it was to Kanata that they had travelled to watch the film. No point going local when you can get a bus ride in as well. I thought about it for less than half a second and then said a loud, resounding “no”. Rush hour traffic? That means a 45-minute trip to get there and a similar length to get back. I offered to make dinner instead. As I was making dinner anyway, it wasn’t much of a bargaining chip, but, as they say in the legal profession, possession is 9/10s of the law, and I had the car keys. And the car. So, I opened up a bottle of white wine, called my friends in BC, then started to get dinner ready. Sometimes, children have to learn to accept a “no”. And so does Mrs. Ottawacker. In fairness, she did. As she is on holiday, she thinks everyone else is, so she had actually forgotten it was a work week.
Dinner was taken in the garden, then we decided we were all tired. Only I slept well. We are definitely in the middle of a role reversal here.
