A joyous rant
I am a follower of a Scottish football club called Hibernian FC. (Pause for you to say, “I’ve never heard of them.”) Last night the Hibees defeated Partizan Belgrade 2-0 in a hostile atmosphere, in a European tie in Belgrade. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the match on ‘steam radio.’ (Radio Scotland.) It follows our heroic defeat against Midtjylland last week. Also this week Rangers demolished Viktoria Pizen 3-0 at Ibrox, while Dundee United got a creditable 2-2 draw away to Rapid Vienna. Of course, to some pundits south of the border, Scottish league football is a frenetic affair played on highland cow patches with more brawn than finesse.
A note for sceptics. Hibernian were the first of five different Scottish football clubs to reach the semi-final stage of the European Cup. (Champion’s League.) Celtic Football Club were the first British club to lift that trophy in 1967. Football these days is mostly about money. But not entirely.
