Mural being painted in Newmilns in East Ayrshire.
Newmilns is a ‘lace’ town which first started using hand looms at the end of the 16th century when Flemish weavers settled in the district. By the end of the 18th century the lace industry rose to national prominence. Another hundred years on and the hand loom was being replaced with the power loom. From 1907 until the 1970’s lace making flourished in the town. These days, despite a diminished capacity in the industry, lace making is still an important part of life here with a world wide demand.
