A tiny mouse lamp…

I was struggling to find anything tiny or even small for today’s blip and had even forgotten that as I walked past this posh interior design shop I snapped a tiny mouse lamp. Yesterday John W

and I had been discussing the merits of free software we’d found for Apple (me) and android (John) and that inspired me to experiment more with Inkwork. Thank you John for saving my Tiny Tuesday blip;-). But showing the results of John’s inspiration speak louder than words so that is my saying today…

The proverb "actions speak louder than words" means that what someone actually does is a better indication of their true intentions and character than what they say they will do. The idea behind this saying is that actions are more reliable and carry more weight than mere words. It’s a version of the saying "words are cheap."

The sentiment behind this phrase is ancient, with similar expressions found in various languages and cultures. While the exact phrasing has evolved, the core idea that actions are more significant than words has been around for centuries.

Here's a breakdown of the phrase's development:
Early forms:
As recorded in Hansard (the traditional name of the transcripts of UK Parliamentary debates), a version of the proverb "actions speak louder than words" was spoken in 1628 by John Pym (Member of Parliament for Tavistock, Devon):

"Louder" added:
The specific wording "actions speak louder than words" is attributed to English clergyman Thomas Manton in a 1693 book of sermons, according to wikiHow.
Popularisation:
The phrase in its current form became widely known in the United States around 1736.
Biblical connection:
The concept also echoes a principle found in 1 John 3:18, which emphasises demonstrating love through actions rather than just words.
St. Anthony of Padua:
Some sources also trace the idea back to a sermon by St. Anthony of Padua in the 13th century, who said, "Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak," according to Quora.

The term "actions speak louder than words" means it's better to do something than just talk about it. It is a version of the saying "words are cheap."
