A Meandering Life...

Rod of Asclepius

I have long hinted I have been involved with a project at Men's Shed, well here it is.

Our local hospital has had a new surgical wing built and the Men's Shed was asked to make something that a time-capsule could housed in. They are unable to put it into the ground. I was asked by our chairman to do a little stained glass window that would attached to a wooden box he had come up with. I suggested something a little different...

I have not made a 3D stained glass object before, I guess this has sorted that craving. The building is my representation of a Cottage Hospital and the body of the thing is about 20" x 16" x 16" high. The roof is a little bigger.

I felt a stained glass feature would outlast a wooden one considering it will be housed outside in a large light well of the new wing. The public and staff will see it from all sides but access is limited.

I have had a huge learning curve building this. Some things I would do differently. Soldering such large pieces has been a big challenge.

It will stand on top of a thick oak double legged plinth that has been engraved dedicating it to the staff, volunteers and patients. Not to be behind the times our Men Shed's electronic wizards have 3D printed window casements that sit inside and shine LED lights at night. The Rod of Asclepius will also light up. Solar panels around the base will recharge the batteries.

Holidays of those involved may mean the installation may be delayed a while but when it is I will show it on Blip.
