Sedbergh WI Bookclub

Another sunny day. 8 people got on the bus today, I thought this might mean it would be full, but there were still a couple of seats left. We had our bookclub meeting sat in a garden right next to the Howgills. We had been reading The Invention of Nature by Andrea Wulf. It is a biography of Alexander Von Humboldt, subtitled The Lost Hero of Science. Born in 1769 and described as a polymath, geographer, naturalist and explorer. He pre dated the time when people specialised in small parts of a huge subject, which gave him a unique and unrestricted view of the world. He was much admired by later naturalists like Charles Darwin. This got the highest score ever recorded, and we read it by accident. It was a replacement for the book we were supposed to get. It’s a huge book, and features about 100 pages of notes at the end, but well worth a read.
After this amazing book, we were treated to a delicious array of cake, fruit and other delicious items and a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. An excellent afternoon.
