Crane Greave Farm

Passed on my circular walk, up through the village and along the farm access track and then down the hill via the field path.

I’ll be back shortly when I’ve taken my meds.

I’ve been thinking about the topographical names that go with homesteads, roads, and other features of our local area and Crane Greave is an interesting one. Although Crane might refer to the bird and I can imagine that this area of the hillside would once have been moorland and suited to the bird. (But - maybe not the kind of cleared moorland we are used to seeing today.)

There is also the suggestions on Google:
‘Crane is a surname. The name is a derivative of "Cron" in Old English or is the English translation of the German "Krahn" or "Kranich." According to The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain & Ireland, "Cron," "Krahn" and "Kranich" all mean "crown" in both Old English and German respectively.’

Topographical Association: The name could also indicate someone who lived near a place where cranes were found, like wetlands or rivers.

Greave:
Topographic Surname:
"Greave" comes from the Old English word "graefe," meaning grove or a thicket of bushes.

Settlement Location:
This suggests the original bearer of the name lived near a grove or wooded area.

There’s an interesting account of rearing baby Cranes at Slimbridge WWT

Note to myself: I think I managed the walk and  my evening food preparation on the medication I took at 12.30pm. Although I attempted to take my next dose 3 hours later, I think I forgot to add the dispersible tablet but I was afraid to repeat the dose in case it wasn’t just water.  I was really tired when I got home from my walk, only to find the 4 sheep were back, mostly eating grass as. The flower beds are pretty well over now - The thistle family members survive but sheep are not that stupid as to go for them. So I herded the sheepdown to the footpath and the stone style and rang KA who has contact with the shepherd.

It was one of those days!  I came home from the active movement class because I was having a brain fog moment and couldn’t cope with the quick fire change of direction instructions. Not happened to me before.
