Great British Bake Off winner Peter has his own Fringe show this year in the Pleasance Courtyard Cabaret Room, each one featuring a special guest. Today's guest was tennis coach Judy Murray.
We learned much about the shortbread that her mother constantly provides for the family at every occasion (though she did not share the recipe...) her experience of Strictly Come Dancing, of how she became a tennis coach, supporting her boys who became champions in their own right, and, of course of the inspiration behind her novel, a murder mystery in the setting of a tennis tournament, which sounds like a good read.
Apart from the interview and tasting (main photo) of a delicious-sounding coconut pavlova (which Judy took away with her) members of the audience could join a raffle for a challenge. The extra shows the two winning candidates in a timed competition with Judy - top; the faster to whip double cream until it could be held over their head without mishap: bottom; while blindfolded, to decorate two cupcakes with cream and sprinkles. They both set-to with great skill and humour, to the delight of the audience and, clearly to Peter himself.
As we filed out we bumped into three more church members who, unbeknownst to each other, had also attended and we all agreed it was a super show, Peter proving a perfect host and interviewer, Judy an amusing guest. .
All going our own way, we had lunch at the 1505 cafe, sharing a table with a lovely couple from Stratford-Upon-Avon who had come for the Tattoo, not realising that there was a whole Festival and Fringe besides, so will return fully-prepared next year. They departed for a show they had managed to book and we to a tour of the charity shops as far as a suitable bus stop home.
