VJ Day
FRIDAY
I woke up at 4:30 am and sat in the living room for an hour (it was already light outside) before going back to bed and sleeping until 9:00 am.
It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster sort of day:
The morning began with news about the cock-up on the bowls front (see yesterday’s entry), followed by a text from Harriet saying she’d just had a tough interview for a Clinical Fellowship job. Her current work contract ends at the end of September, so this was an important one.
I then spent an hour tidying in the garden, but came inside just after midday when the heat became quite intense.
Late afternoon, I took a quick walk around the village. The flags are up on the village triangle, along with soldier silhouettes and poppies, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ Day. To me, the scene pictured projects a solemn picture — whereas my late Mum and Dad always reflected happily on VE and VJ Day, recalling the street celebrations.
Early evening brought a trip to Sainsbury’s for jam, clotted cream, and other bits and pieces, ready for a garden party in Prestatyn tomorrow (we’re on scone duty).
On the way home, Harriet rang to say she’d been offered the job — a huge relief all round. Congratulations to her; she’s worked so hard on her career progression.
The weekend now starts here and I hope, that on the other side of the world, the Trump - Putin summit in Alaska comes up with some sort of acceptable solution.
