The Shoebury Boom

This shot shows the remains of the Shoebury Boom in East Beach, Shoeburyness. The original boom was erected in 1939 as a coastal defence barrier that stretched from Shoeburyness in Essex to Sheerness in Kent in order to protect the Thames Estuary from naval attack during World War II. In deep waters there would have been anti-submarine nets in place. Originally, it was 5.6 miles long.

What you see here is the replacement boom of 1953 built during the Cold War. However, the shift to a nuclear threat rendered the boom obsolete. Fascinating to see.

Thank you Marlieske for hosting the Derelict Challenge.
