The Monet bridge
I always think of Monet when I visit the park. The bridge spans ponds that I am sure the artist would have liked to paint. It is a tranquil spot in the village and, at the moment, one of the places where you can find some deep shade, sit on a bench and watch the world go by. That is really all we can do at the moment as it it is too hot to do anything else. We have been promised a drop in temperature around Wednesday. I spent last evening in a long conversation with the local police and neighbours. Four of my neighbours, who are not there at the moment, have now been broken into, things stolen, dog poo thrown on the outside walls and beds slept in. Bunches of keys have also been stolen which give access to neighbouring houses and also a car key. Everyone suspects a large family which has recently moved in next to these houses. They are very antisocial playing loud music and sitting out in the street laughing and shouting when everyone else has gone to bed. The young lads swagger noisily down the street and they have a ladder in the back alley which allows them access to the roofs. The police know that they have been evicted from other properties in other villages and that the father has been in and out of prison but they can do nothing without proof. There does not seem to be much coordination between the local police employed by the Mairie and the gendarmerie. The gendarmes came once and asked some questions but did not take fingerprints. One of the lads has twice come to the house asking for salt and milk and I am worried that he is casing the house. I am considering getting some security cameras installed but these cannot point into the street under French law. Doorbell cameras are illegal. As someone said last night, it only takes one bad family to spoil a neighbourhood…
