Roskilde
…is an old Danish city famous for its Domkirke (cathedral) and the Viking Ships Museum.
The main picture shows one of the functioning replicas of a Viking vessel from around AD 1000. Cruises are available daily during the summer season.
In the background is the Protestant cathedral, the royal burial ground of the Danish kings and queens since the reformation. The name of the city literally translates to “Famous Well”.
The extras show the market place with an impressive late-19th-century fountain, and the largest of the wells, “Magle Kilde”. It stills is discharging 15 cubic meters of water per hour, this had once been six times more, and then powered five mills, the beginning of Roskilde’s industry.
