Back down to Earth...
Following swiftly on from yesterday's happy, fluffy mood, today brought one of darkest gloom. Actually nothing serious, but as regular readers will know I am rather keen on my cricket, and today I witnessed one of the most inept performances ever by Surrey against Hampshire in the One Day Cup.
The photo shows Surrey opener Rory Burns successfully negotiating the first ball of the day from the fiery South African Kyle Abbott, but from thereon things just went down hill as Surrey stumbled and staggered to a totally inadequate 160 all out in the 47th over. Hampshire duly knocked off the runs for the loss of only one wicket in less than 20 overs.
There is some mitigation to be put forward for Surrey's recent woes, as we are in effect missing 20 first team players through a combination of injury and participation in the wretched soulless competition that is the Hundred. This has meant that players with very little experience of the professional game have been thrown in at the deep end, and sadly so far they have taken a bit of a beating.
