I Had Underestimated…

… The trickiness of darning silk!
As a novice mender I thought, ‘how hard can it be?’
Quite, actually.
It’ll do.
It’s not a repair I’m proud of.
The alternative would have been ironing-on a fibre thing over the hole, which I felt would have been too stiff for silk. (As a non-sewer I have hemmed curtains in the past (don’t, I’m not proud) with that stuff, so I know it behaves pretty much like an American flag on the Moon).

At least there’s nothing to catch on the fabric now, should I ever decide to wear it. It’s definitely ‘of an era’ (but it does have a gorgeous ‘drape’).
I washed it too, and the pervasive whiff of ‘Craven A’ has pretty much (?) disappeared. I miss it, as it was very evocative of my Grandmother. Innocent days… When the GP recommended smoking as a cure for ‘nerves’. (She used to refer to it as ‘just warming my nose’).

I have meringues drying out in a very cool oven.
Wonder whether I’ll remember to take them out before bed?
