Hiding in Plain Sight
Met up with two friends this morning for a nature walk and as we returned to the dirt lot where our cars were parked, someone happened to spot this very well camouflaged dragonfly in the leaf litter. It's obviously nearing the end of its short life, showing signs of wear. It's a meadowhawk, possible a white-faced meadowhawk in the Libelludiae genus. In addition to this nice find, we also managed to see/hear 30 species of birds which is quite a lot for this time of year.
Back at home for lunch and some pottering in the garden, then a nap, and now back outside enjoying the beautiful weather.
A few minutes ago, I noticed some odd movement in a big basket of pansies on the deck - caught my attention since it isn't windy and yet the flower is bobbing around. A closer look revealed a big katydid happily munching away. He should be safe enough the flowers and won't do any serious harm, so I won't move him. I actually like katydids and crickets even though I know they are considered as pests by some.
Loads of monarch caterpillars eating milkweed in my garden so when I cut bits of fresh milkweed for my captive caterpillars, I have to look closely. I will have to remember to plant a little more next year in case it is another good monarch year.
