A Spectacular Arrival in Bilbao

We packed up again and travelled to Bilbao. Our arrival at Estación Abando Indalecio Prieto made a strong first impression – the huge stained-glass window filling the end wall of the station hall depicts regional scenes and offers a spectacular welcome. Bilbao immediately felt more metropolitan than Valladolid or León, and as we walked to the hotel the contrast of historic buildings such as Iglesia de San José with modern structures like the Iberdrola Tower gave the city a striking and confident character. It was an exciting start to the final stage of the holiday and set us up nicely for a few days exploring the Basque Country.
