Accidental?
When is an accident not an accident?
If conditions are set up so that an accident is very likely to happen; is it really an accident?
Ingeborg has set an almost impossible challenge this week for Abstract Thursday AT530 - 'Accidental Abstract'.
Now accidents are a rare occurrence in the Gen2 day, so the chance of one happening on a particular Thursday must be almost negligable.
I therefore set up conditions so an 'accident' would be more likely.
At 8:15, I set the camera on wide angle, iso 100, f8, 1/5 second and held it loosely in my right hand at my side. I set out with it switched on and let my arm swing naturally as I walked. Every few yards, I pressed the shutter without looking. This was repeated every few yards as I walked from my house, along the High Street, through a Wynd to the Esplanade and Promenade, then round the harbour. As it got darker, I had to increase the exposure up to 1 second.
In all, I made nearly 150 exposures. Were they accidents? Were any of them accidents? I chose where to walk and I chose when to press the shutter, I suppose I also had some influence over the direction it was pointing, either directly behind or to the side.
Finally, I had to choose one for this blip. That wasn't an accident either because I deliberately selected it from all the other hopefuls. I hope it was the right choice.
