Cotapaxi
Slightly later start at 7.20 this morning to visit Cotapaxi volcano this time heading south on the Pan-American highway. As we enter the national park and approach the volcano it is in clear view but the scene changes constantly as the clouds roll past. At a height of 5,897 meters it's the second highest summit in Ecuador. It's an active volcano and as recently as 5 days ago there was a 4.6 magnitude earthquake in the area. We then move on to Limpiopungo Lagoon and walk a part of the way along the lake. As we are now around 4,000 metres it is really cold with a biting wind.
After a further 2 hour drive we arrived at Quilotoa Volcano and Lagoon which is quite a spectacle. The water in the caldera of the volcano changes colour as the clouds pass over. I do the extra walk to the 2nd viewing area while Himself finds a coffee place with a fire. The walk down is more treacherous than the slog back up and the additional view didn't justify the effort.
After a very late lunch we head back to Quito and finally get to the hotel 12 hours after setting off.
