The Hand and Meursault
More festivalising.
Out to Balerno in the morning to see the aunt. And I never took a photo. In fact, we spent much of my visit going over a photo – of all her wedding guests taken on the steps of the Cally Palace Hotel. Much fun and a good prompt for reminiscences.
Then a pre-holiday haircut from James, before a trip up to the Queens Hall to see the Withered Hand and guests. Louis Abbott, Euan Burton, Andy Bruce and Pete Liddle were the backing band, and he did turns with James Yorkston, Kathryn Williams, Jill Lorean, Meursault and Billy Liar. The first half was particularly good as, yes, he did his old songs. Second half was a bit heavy on Kathryn Williams and newer stuff, right until the most wonderful finale where everyone returned to the stage for Religious Songs. And the whole of the Queens Hall sang along. Very fabulous and quite moving, indeed. Just like being in a church. Which we were.
That reminds me that yesterday small boy was looking round our front room and I showed him my fiddle. I’ll play a little for him, I thought. So I did. Grandad, he said, could you turn it off?
