The Superheroes: From Antiquity to Contemporary
Emma and I went to Tampere to buy paint for our new crafting and painting table. Well, the table is not that new, but is hasn't been painted yet. Leevi has designed the table, he built it to himself and to Emma. And we got one too! I bought Farrow & Ball paint, first time ever. It's not commonly available here, there is only one re-seller in Helsinki. However, the shop owner has a workroom also in Tampere, where she delivers pre-ordered paints.
After visiting Cafe Puisto we went to the Museum Centre Vapriikki to see an exihibition called The Superheroes: From Antiquity to Contemporary.
The exhibition explores the role models for superheroes in ancient myths and legends. Ancient myths have changed over time, and so has the appearance of heroes. Heracles has evolved into Superman, the Greek Amazon into Wonder Woman and Hermes into The Flash. But their mission – to guide new generations towards a better and fairer world – has remained unchanged.
In the photo there is Heracles, son of the god Zeus and mortal Alcomene. He is the demi-god of legends with exceptional strenght and a noble soul. Zeus's wife, Hera, was so enraged by her husband's infidelity that she sent two huge snakes to Heracle's cradle when he was only a few months old. Heracles, however, killed the beasts with his bare hands and godle strenght. Hera later contributed to the Twelve Labours that Heracles faced as an adult. Heracles nonetheless emerged victorioius from these demanding endeavours, erasing any doubt of his hero status.
Heracles's powerful legacy was the primary inspiration for Superman, an alien from outer space.
