Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May
"Gather ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying.
And this same flower that smiles today
Tomorrow will be dying."
~ Robert Herrick
We had not visited my mother-in-law for quite some time, so this was a travel day, in which we drove my Chevy Sonic to Homewood at Martinsburg to enjoy a very nice lunch of takeout pizza, salad, and stromboli with her and spend some quality time together.
My husband and I had stopped in Altoona, on the way, to buy a baker's dozen of Himmel's butter and sugar sweet corn, the first local sweet corn we will have had this year. It's going for $8 right now, which seems a bit steep, but it's the best corn we know of, so there. We left two ears with her and kept the other 11 to enjoy ourselves. Perhaps you'll see photos sometime soon!
Anyway, we spent the afternoon sitting together in her living room, catching up on things, and we had a very nice visit. As we took our leave, and I carried our stuff back out to the car, I snapped a few photos of the plants blooming in her yard right now. They included this pretty rosebush which was blooming profusely.
I was reminded of the quote above, which encourages us to make the best use of time, for it is flying indeed. We are heading into late August, and the fall semester starts at Penn State on Monday, so town and the local surroundings are busy and packed with traffic, as you might imagine.
These are all signs that summer is growing long in the tooth. Here is just a helpful reminder: If there is some happy summer thing you thought you might want to do, GET TO IT!!! There is still time! Tomorrow is promised to no one. DO IT NOW!
We got home, and my car threw a code in our driveway. (Yes, once again, the bad thing waited until we were safe in our driveway at home to take place. Hard to believe our good fortune!) It says not to drive it in the meantime. There is a repair that it needs, apparently, and my husband called our mechanic as soon as he got inside the house, but he just missed him for the week. Oh well, I guess we'll need to follow up on that for Monday. It's always something, isn't it?
I need a soundtrack song, and here's perhaps an unexpected one. I went from roses to Guns 'n Roses, and I bet you didn't know they covered this tune, but here it is: Sympathy for the Devil. It can be found on their Greatest Hits album, which I own, of course. And as a bonus, here is the original, from the Rolling Stones, recorded live at Zilker Park in 2006.
