Battle of Louden Hill

In 1307, at Louden Hill, Robert the Bruce finally decided enough was enough. Rather than continue his tour of Scotland’s hills and caves, he chose this valley as the backdrop for a lesson in tactics. The English knights, full of gallantry but light on common sense, charged straight into boggy ground and got themselves embarrassingly stuck. Bruce’s men, less glamorous but far handier with a blade, finished the job. Historians call it a turning point in the Wars of Independence. Locals just say: bring horses to a swamp, and Louden Hill will do the rest.
