Mr Zed Was Here

Didn't get much time today, so I took a little dander down onto the West Pier in Dún Laoghaire for a change, the other half-mile, granite pincer that comprises the wide, beetling embrace of the harbour. Despite the yaught club and the tinkly plantation of masts in the bay, this is essentially the poorer, unfashionable side, just that little bit farther from the town centre, adjacent to the sewage works and junkyard. Perfect territory for Mr Zed, the speaker in this poem, from my just-published collection, The Sky Road:

Theree Postcards From Mr Zed

1. Seascape

The best thing about the sea is that
basically, it's flat
and
there is no land.

2. Night Gazing

The big dark is my thing.
Who, after all, would miss
what the deadlights promise
and never bring?

3. Self Portrait

Set one mirror
staring into another,

unlock those cool walls
and you can fall

straight

down my throat.
