North Weald, Battle Of Britain 85

My daughter heard that Aero Legends at The Squadron, North Weald Airfield had organised a ceremony to commemorate the 85th anniversary of one of the heaviest raids on North Weald during the Battle of Britain. We met there in our S2000s.

Over two hundred bombs were dropped on the airfield and the village. During the raid nine young members of the 7th (Home Defence) Battalion, the Essex Regiment were killed when a shelter took a direct hit. The oldest of the dead was 19, the youngest 17. They had only arrived at North Weald the day before.

The ceremony took place in front of one of the Spitfires belonging to Aero Legends. The main man spoke and then a young woman read out the names of those killed. We were moved. Winston Churchill said, Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilisation.

The man with the cap and handle bar moustache is Charlie Brown, Spitfire pilot and Head of Training at Aero Legends.
