Watch your coconuts

Two of these flew into me life this afternoon. The first one flew indoors. It was laying on its back, so I quickly chucked it out of a front window without seeing its attractive 'plumage'. Shortly afterwards I saw another one flying around seemingly intent on entering a back window. Having shut all the windows I went outside to examine it, where it had landed on the ground.

An attractive creature to be sure. Unfortunately it turns out that it is a 'red palm weevil' (rhynchophorus palmarum); an invasive pest, deadly to many types of palm tree.

First identified in Galicia in 2013. It has subsequently infected many palms that have needed to be  either treated or destroyed.
