Sunday: Stereotypes

There is an explanation for this pretty boring photo.

I was on my way back from a regular shop at Tesco’s and stopped at traffic lights next to these signs.  I’ve seen them before but never noticed their mottos.  For girls, it’s ‘Let Your Light Shine’.  For the boys, it’s ‘Reach Beyond Your Grasp’.

Now, is it me or is this stereotypical nonsense?  The message for girls being that they should be some kind of shining vessel, but that boys should reach above and beyond.  Imagine how interesting it would be if the slogans were reversed and what that would suggest.

I showed the photo to K when I got home and she said exactly the same thing, without any prompting from me.

Am I being oversensitive about this?

In other news, we had a lovely catch up with friend Janice in Vancouver.  And the neighbours from next door dropped off some home-grown potatoes and spring onions.
