Sitting in the Sun…..Again.

This weather is amazing. I can’t remember a better summer from my perspective. 1976 was a close runner but at that time we lived in a top floor flat with young children, so sitting out in a garden being idle was not an option although I do remember for two weeks broiling under a French sun and seeing the English landscape turn brown.

This year I seem to have spent far too long sitting in the sunshine. I prefer having a sea to look at, as in Orkney,  rather than the grass and trees of the Meadows, but I’m not complaining at all. This may be the last afternoon of sunshine and heat and so  I banished all thoughts of going out and about even though most of the visitors should have gone home and it could be a pleasant experience again.

I was out and about this morning to witness the dismantling of the Book Festival village and then grace the inside of the local Sainsbury’s which was beautifully quiet. I met a friend that I haven’t seen for several months and heard how stressful she is finding her new job. I felt so sorry for her and even more grateful to have my bus pass and be able to sit in the sun with my book.

Today would have been His Lordship’s 92nd birthday and there would have been cake and possibly a glass of champagne in some splendid location to celebrate. Instead I have bought a blueberry bun and lit a candle in his honour. Happy celestial birthday, Sandy!
