On the isle of Harris
After spending at least 6 years holidaying on Skye, this year we decided to travel further afoot and we rented a house on Harris for the week. I'll only moan about the journey there and back this one time. It was mainly due to the fact that we needed to get a car ferry to take us across from Ullapool to Stornoway. According to J, we needed to get up around 6.30 am and be on our way by 8.30 in order to catch the car ferry around 5.30pm - you can never tell what the traffic will be like and there may be an accident on the road - neither of which happened. Including stopping for a quick picnic lunch, I think we arrived at the ferry terminal around 2.30pm, giving us a 3 hour wait in the carpark. We did of course go for a walk to stretch our legs and look at the shops.
The boat was pretty full, but it wasn't tourists, it was people who had attended "The Island Games" on the mainland and were now returning home. The crossing was fine and the restaurant had the biggest and freshest fish suppers I've ever seen.
The house we had rented was only about a 30 minute drive from the ferry terminal, which was good. After having a whole beach to ourselves in front of the house on Skye, I was glad to see that there was a loch to look out on from the house.
