Dulwich College

My wife has been cat-sitting for our youngest daughter whilst she has been on holiday in Portugal. I was scheduled to help with some gardening work today so I drove up to Sydenham this morning. Compared to previous such journeys today went quite smoothly with only one set of roadworks to contend with. This found me making slow progress for a while alongside Dulwich College.

Dulwich College was founded in 1619 by the actor, Edward Alleyn. It had humble beginnings providing education for 12 poor scholars but began to develop into its present form in the mid-19th century.  The school moved into its current grand premises in 1870. It is a private day and boarding school for boys aged up to 19 years of age. The fees for day boarders are around £10,000 per term and for boarders around £20.000 per term. Notable alumni include Ernest Shackleton,  P.G.Wodehouse, Raymond Chandler, Michael Ondaatje and one, Mr N.Farage, of whom the least said, the better. The extra is another view of the College buildings and grounds snapped from my car as we waited in the roadworks.

My garden jobs were hedge trimming and cutting back a fir tree. The first of these went well and I brought a  large garden refuse bag full of hedge trimmings back with me. The second job was going OK until the chain on my chain saw came off. So that's a maintenance job for tomorrow.
