We walked down the street first thing this morning to try and determine the source of the noise which was somewhere between a wood chipper and a pile driver. Sound bounces around on our street so that it can be difficult to figure out where it is coming from. After initially walking the wrong way we turned around and thought for awhile that it might be Paul in his woodworking studio. A few days ago while he was working there his watch got the message that he had fallen. He didn't hear it , so didn't respond and an ambulance  (and a fire engine) were dispatched. (At least we know they work...)

This morning, however, it wasn't Paul. Somebody seems to be constructing an old fashioned water tower on Los Alamos Road more or less above the end of our road. We'll have to investigate further tomorrow. We think it is on the large agricultural property adjacent to Los Alamos Road. It used to have the little red barn which was a landmark around here and several horses which we often visited with carrots. The barn burned down in the Glass fire  and the horses have gone. This water tower is the first sign of the place coming to life again.

We went to the nursery to buy a few plants to fill in some holes in our garden. Plants have a way of mysteriously dropping dead we know not why...The usual culprit is some kind of failure in our aging irrigation system. It is large and complicated and difficult to monitor. We found just the plants we wanted which was good. The resident cat sitting on the counter by the cash register bit me when I tried to pat it, apparently because somebody had just been in there with a dog, but I sort of remembered that this cat has bitten me before. Hopefully I have learned my lesson  now.

We were going to go to a shop nearby which carries solar lights but turned the wrong way and decided to go home instead of negotiating our way through the downtown maze of one-way streets. We wanted to light our street address which is mounted in large numbers on a larger  rock at the bottom of the driveway. Instead I cut back the rose bushes that were obscuring the numbers and John took one of the solar lights we already have and put it down there to see if it does illuminate the number at night. Now all we have to do is go down there after dark and see how well it works.

But first things first. It's now wine time.
