Brothers Parting Stone
Hike up Seat Sandal and Fairfield. On the way down I did a loop of Grisedale Tarn and found myself at this spot. The plaque in the photo is on top of a crag and reads Brothers Parting Stone. On the face of the crag there is an inscription from part of a poem written by William Wordsworth in memory of his last meeting with his brother John in September 1800. William, John and their sister Dorothy had walked from their home, Dove Cottage in Grasmere, to Grisedale Tarn. Four years later John died when his ship was wrecked.
