Vive la langue française

St Boniface, a downtown area of Winnipeg, is the largest francophone suburb in Canada outside of Quebec.  Therefore the French language is positioned first in the traffic signs in the streets around here.  

Elsewhere around the city the usual universal red STOP sign is used. 

Such a proactive policy makes me proud that back home in New Zealand, for the moment at least, the Maori language features on a wide range of public signs and on public broadcasting channels.  

There are moves afoot by our new government to dial back that influence.  Supporters of our bilingual culture are watching closely . . .
