Jessie in Bowral

MountGrace’s mother, Jessie, used to love her visits to Bowral. On one such visit, in about 2004, we enjoyed showing her some of the historic buildings in the town centre. We found some photos of that visit in one of her albums.

This is the rectory of the Anglican church of St Jude, built in 1882 on land given by John Norton Oxley to provide Bowral with a church, rectory and glebe. In the extra Jessie is sitting outside the church.

There is a confusing number of John Oxleys associated with the early history of Bowral. J N Oxley’s father was John Oxley the surveyor general and explorer, who received the first land grant in the area. John Norton was a farmer and parliamentarian.
