The Länd

A new sticker in a prominent position showed up at my little train station. Someone visiting from Baden-Württemberg was here. I wonder if it's the bug which placed it there....

The sticker roughly says: " Nice here. But have you ever been to Baden-Württemberg?"

Baden-Württemberg is one of the 16 German states. I'm from Rheinland-Pfalz. The Rhine river separates us.
Ba-Bü was much criticised for its "The Länd" slogan (why English, stupid because the ä in land, not proper German, ....). I heard the stickers are no longer available, but here is one.

I did like what Ba-Wü was doing before "The Länd".
It went: "We can do anything besides High German" - "Wir können alles außer Hochdeutsch".
Meaning they can do anything, but not speak good high German, only local dialects.

I could say the same about me. Sometimes I like to joke (especially in business meetings) that my English is perhaps better than my Hochdeutsch. But I do get along with my Pfälzisch. Could be worse. I could have been born or live in the Saarland.
